Double Cleansing: Is It Actually Necessary?

by Suveraan Suve on Aug 19, 2026
Woman using an oil cleanser as the first step of a double cleansing skincare routine

Double cleansing means washing the face twice in sequence — first with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve sunscreen, makeup, and oil-based buildup, then with a water-based cleanser to clear away everything else, including sweat and residual product — and it genuinely matters more for some routines than others.

Why Two Steps Instead of One

A single water-based cleanser is generally effective at removing water-soluble buildup like sweat and light residue, but sunscreen, heavier makeup, and SPF formulated to resist washing off can be genuinely difficult to fully remove in one pass. An oil-based first cleanse dissolves these oil-based products specifically, and the water-based second cleanse then removes what's left along with the oil cleanser itself.

Who Actually Needs This Two-Step Approach

Situation Double Cleanse Recommended?
Wore sunscreen or makeup that day Yes
Applied heavy or long-wear SPF Yes
No sunscreen or makeup, just a normal day indoors Not strictly necessary
Very dry or reactive skin Consider skipping or using a gentle single cleanse

Pro tip: Double cleansing is specifically a nighttime step, not a morning one. In the morning, skin generally just needs a single gentle cleanse to remove overnight oil buildup, since there's no sunscreen or makeup to break down yet.

How to Double Cleanse Without Over-Stripping Skin

  1. Apply an oil-based cleanser to dry skin and massage gently for 30-60 seconds to dissolve sunscreen and makeup
  2. Rinse with lukewarm water, then follow immediately with a gentle water-based cleanser from our face care collection
  3. Pat skin dry rather than rubbing, and follow with your normal routine

Watch out: Using two harsh, foaming cleansers back to back — rather than one oil-based and one gentle water-based step — is a common mistake that strips the skin barrier rather than cleansing it properly. The two steps are meant to be complementary, not identical in intensity.

Signs You're Over-Cleansing

Tightness immediately after cleansing, increased sensitivity to products that never used to bother you, or visible flaking are all signs the skin barrier is being stripped rather than gently cleaned — if these show up, reducing to a single gentle cleanse, especially on days without heavy makeup or SPF, is usually the right adjustment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to double cleanse every night?

Not necessarily — it's most useful on days you wore sunscreen or makeup; a single gentle cleanse is often sufficient on days without either.

Should I double cleanse in the morning too?

Generally no — double cleansing is a nighttime step meant to remove the day's buildup; mornings typically only need a single gentle cleanse.

Can double cleansing dry out my skin?

It can, if both steps use harsh, stripping cleansers rather than a gentle oilbased first step followed by a gentle water-based second step — the method itself isn't inherently drying when done correctly.
